downlights and insulation

When fitting lots of downlights, what is the recommended distance of the insulation, Fitting 9 small lights in a small room I can see I am going to have to cut it about a fair bit, is there a method used? Ie is it cut round or just pulled apart....

just standard 12v on a non flammable surface...

CFLs give off hardly any heat. LEDs run completely stone cold.

no they dont (well not ones that give lots of light anyway), but i guess in comparison to halogen lights they are stone cold.

Thats what I was getting at.

They dont give off any level of heat that would limit the placing of them.

Thank you, can get some of that wire from a shed... looks an ok idea and cheap. I will be able to push it nice and close with that....
