Hi All

I have a problem with the lighting in my downstairs lighting loop.

I have recently been on about this before and was advised to get a Multimeter but i just found them too confusing to use and i have made some, emphasis on some, progress.

The problem i am having is how to re-connect the wires properly that i have.

I have re-connected all the wires except one set for my ceiling loop and all the lights work except the downstairs living room lights, which are x 2 lights.

The kitchen is working, as is the hall and the two cupboards.

I have one set of wires left which i assume work the living room lights as these are the only two that are not working, There is one set of wires left, a red and a black and i don't know where to connect these as i have already used all the slots in the loop.

Is it simply the case of connecting these to one of the existing slots i used and if so what one?

Many thanks guys.

John

If all your other lights are working now , then i take it that the lounge light(s) are the last on the circuit. How many cables do you have at each light and how are the lights switched, ( one switch or two ) ???
Do any of the cables have red/brown sleeving on them ?

Maybe one light has one cable to it, if so that should come from the switched live and neutral at the other fitting, not from a permanent feed !

Thanks for the reply sparky, there are two lights in the living room that work of the one switch, a double dimmer is connected and one works the kitchen light and the other work the two living room lights.

I have the bog standard three wires in each light, i have connected the far away ones which do not have the loop on it as this is just the three wires to the black and red. I am left with two wires, a red with red sleeving and a black.

Sorry John,

I've had a long day,

Is there any chance of a picture of the cabling ?

I will try and get my head around it tomorrow mate.

Sorry Sparky, don't have a camera mate.

I have connected the black and red sleeving to the live from the light, the red to the loop, the other reds to the loop and the blacks the the neutral, as in the pictures on the forum.

This leaves one set of wires, a black and a red and the red has a red sleeve. The living rooms still don't work but all other lights on the loop are working, kitchen, hall etc.

Sorry i can't be of more help.

Typically where a room has two lights, one light fitting has the "normal" loop connections in it, and the other has just a live & neutral (and earth!).

The second light is thus run in parralel to the first, and it's cable will run to the rose for the first light. It's neutral should be connected to the neutral connector, and it's live should be connected to the switched live block in the rose.

It sounds like this is what you have. My advice to you would be first to identify which cable runs to the second light, and tuck this out the way and ignore it for the time being.

Then, the first light fitting is wired in standard loop-in form, as the wiki & faq thread show.

Having access to a multimeter (in particular the ohmeter function) will be very useful for identifying the wires if necessary.
