Dry January

No comparison
On the contrary. Drugs and alcohol cause unnecessary deaths of people in their millions. Drugs and alcohol are addictive. Drugs and alcohol directly cause avoidable health problems and costs billions in medical expenditure. Both are directly related to untold deaths, murders, injury and suffering to others.

Why would anybody have a dry January?
The puritans must be ignored; don't feel any pressure to go along with, or any guilt in not going along with, dry January.

Then they kid themselves by having a dry January. Another daft fad that people follow. Be sensible most of the year, or don't - but dry January is a waste of time.
The liver is the organ most probably damaged by too much alcohol. But it's also one of the few organs that can 'heal' itself.
If you must drink too much (14 units per week is the recommended limit, that's about 6 pints, or a bottle and a half of wine) then a couple of days a week, a week each month, or a month each year gives your liver a chance to recover.

I have a glass of wine with my evening meal probably 3 times a week.

I almost never have more than one drink so don’t feel any need to have a dry Jan.

Best comment of the year so far.

That sounds crazy - please explain.
OK
Kills one in ten working age adults.

Example

Any Winehouse
Gary Moore go read up on that.
My uncle
I know someone that never came down for breakfast on their stag night trip.
Road crashes where more than one died after a night on lash and 2 that got run over as you can't judge distance and speed when drunk crossing a road.
Several tradesman not with us that liked the drink.

This explains

It's like everything. Informed choices. Being responsible. I still drink a bit but I think about it.. Cheers.

Choose your poisons carefully because alcohol is a poison.

I'm not against alcohol. At all.
But i detest how it's celebrated and championed by media and advertising.
Which should be banned btw.

If you are drinking to get drunk, you are probably doing it wrong.

Better off controlling your drinking all year. Kills one in ten working age adults never mind the moods swings resulting from mental health problems and the addiction. Like a few things heavy drinking is a form of deliberate self harm.
I drink a bit and last summer I over did it by way too much one night. Was a good night though. Can be fun. Just don't let it kill you.
Possible Americanism creeping in

Gender nonsense - used to be 21 for blokes

-------------------------

Home brew enthusiast here, managed to down a whopping 70.5 units xmas week, even more worryingly that added up to an astonishing 8,169 calories that will take some pedalling off on the push bike.
(I normally keep below the 21 unit safe limit)

On the subject of safe limits, Spain is the place to live, blokes are allowed 35 every week ;)

Only the UK seems to go in for this daft gender equality when it comes safe drinking limits,

the 21 unit safe limit)
Everythings got a safe limit so it’s easier to categorise you and drug you up ££££. Diabetes , blood pressure, cholesterol , iron , salt ,2jabs and a boosters for life.
It’s the only way they can get the nhs to function.
We’re all born the same see. (y)

If you think that, that is up to you. I suspect it's more to do with your dislike of political correctness than it is based on your understanding of the risks of alcohol consumption.
managed to down a whopping 70.5 units xmas week
But at one time there were no 'safe limit' guide lines. Was that down to an absence of political correctness?
Dr John Holmes, senior research fellow from the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group, said having the same guidelines “reflects that there are only very minor differences in alcohol-related health risk between the sexes at this level of consumption”.

There is no 'safe' limit. As your alcohol consumption increases so does your risk of serious illness.
It's like smoking, or having a vaccine - to reduce your risk to adverse and serious illness.

On the subject of safe limits,
There is no 'safe' limit.
