I have recently had some electrical work in a new extension inspected, the work was given the OK but the inspecting electrician has noted that the main earth to the CU ( supplied by the local electrical authority 25 years ago when the house was built ) is only 6mm, as opposed to the present requirement of 16mm as per rev 17 . He is reluctant to sign the certificate of inspection because of this . Can any one help/advise/comment please ?

6mm may be suitable, depending on the type of supply and some other factors.

Even if not, they could just replace the short piece of wire with a larger one.

The size of earthing conductor depends on the type of supply and can be sized via a calculation.
16mm2 is a fit all size though in some cases 6mm2 can be adequate.

Ask your electrician what the type of supply is (TN-S, TN-C-S or TT), what reading he took for Ze and the type and size of main fuse.

In any case, it's probably a very easy job to upgrade the earthing conductor to 16mm2.

can i ask why the size of the earth cable makes a difference?

i.e why the req size has gone up?

Becuase it might melt under fault conditions if it is not big enough.
