I emailed the seller, via ebay, they requested a photo of the problem as a reply, I tried three times to send the photo, each time it was rejected, so I sent the photo to the sellers registered with ebay email address, and explained to the seller. Seller continued to ask for a photo, so I began a dispute. Seller still hasn't responded, and an email from ebay says 'We'll send you an email when the seller responds to your request. If the seller doesn't respond or you can't agree on a solution, you can ask us to step in and help starting 4 Feb.'

Today! I've followed the ebay instructions, to ask them to step in,
  1. Find the item in your Purchases.
  2. Select See request details or See return details.
  3. Select Ask eBay to step in and help.
  4. Choose a reason from the dropdown menu and select Confirm.

Item 3 does not appear in the drop down. Help?

I’ve seen faulty items back and used the messenger app/thingy to send pics. No issues. And eBay gave me the money seconds after I posted it

Are you using a phone or a pc Harry ?

Got it! Looking at the purchase page for the item, More Actions, the second item in the drop down.

Nowt like the steps suggested by ebay's help system.

Tell ebay. If you make it plain their system failed, they cave in. Can you email the pic to ebay? Can't remember.

I had opened one, no reply from the seller, and it had reached the deadline - I just couldn't see how to 'ask ebay to step in', and their instruction of how, didn't work. Simple, when you know how.
Top left hand side of your account help and contact drop down.

Also you do not need a reason to send stuff back according to "Distance selling regulations." I think you have 14 days to reject anything (it might be longer) for no reason.

I think then, the buyer has to pay the postage costs. However, if the item is faulty, then the seller, or maybe ebay pay the return cost. It was all quite slick in the end. I turned it into a dispute, overnight, ebay accepted it as a faulty item by this morning, and issued a return label. The label could either be printed, or a QR code copied, for the PO to label the package. I've never done it before, but I packaged it up, took a ride to the PO, with a copy of the QR on my phone, and got a postage receipt

The receipt wasn't necessary, ebay flagged it as under-way, before I got home - it must have direct access to the tracking.

Yes they do, you will get fully refunded including postage costs

You can often get messed around by dodgy eBay sellers who delay knowing EBay will kick the problem if it’s not within their stated time frame for returns etc.

All in though, I've found eBay's system for returns better than Amazon's- using the eBay app on the phone seems to be easiest

Side note Harry: don't communicate with eBay members outside of eBay's comms system - do it inside so the support staff can see your side of events if they do need to step in

For trade sellers.

A lot of people pretend to just be selling their unwanted possessions, and claim to be "private."

They also hope to evade paying income tax on their trading profits.

If they are not cunning enough to open multiple accounts, each selling just a couple of dozen things, it will be evident from their feedback profile what they are.
