The plain message from all this is to properly check that anyone you have doing gas work is really Gas registered. "Going to take exams" is not enough.

We carry Gas Safe identity cards although we are rarely asked to show them.

The most common easy check is via the Gas Safe web site. If you click the right buttons you can see a photo of the engineer. There are a few crooks who pretend to be someone else who is registered.

As stated you need someone who is prepared to do the necessary to be able to adopt the installation as their own and register it with Vaillant and Building control to regularise the situation.

One last query please !

Thanks for letting me know about checking their picture on the gas safe register website. I have taken a few numbers down and will be calling them today - funny how you find out that neighbours a few doors down are gas registered - I had no idea !!

What I want to know is, on the gas register site, you can check for business by postcode and also by registered business number. When it comes to checking for an engineer, you have to know their id number. What if you don't know this, is there any way you can check by their name ?? Or is it a case of calling them up to ask them personally to check their database ??

Thanks everyone for their input !

Every gas registered business has a registration number. Usually six digits although there are still a few left with five digit numbers. My first was a five digit but after letting it lapse for a couple of years when registration became compulsory it was reissued as a six digit.

The Gas Safe site is not as easy to navigate as it should be. Somewhere there should be a "View Engineers" button. I thought that this was on the business registration page.

Be aware that many engineers will not want to get involved with a situation like yours.

No doubt your right Tony - we have already been through this situation regarding our electrical certificate from the first builder. It has not been easy for us in any aspect. Not that I expect anyone to take on our problems, I am however in need of having the situation rectified. You mentioned you see a 'mad' lady in Oakwood, is there any chance you would be interested in passing by us ?? We're not far from Oakwood station !
