Electric gates

A lot of money just to look cool.

As for laziness, that's easily solved, and for free. Assuming (like 99.9999% of people with typical suburban semi driveway gates) they aren't too high to climb over and you don't lock them anyway they do SFA for security.

So remove them, then not only do you not have to get out of your car to open & close them, you no longer have to paint or clean them.

Why don't you try looking somewhere like this for a starter....

or

As others have said, due to recent legislation, you'd be mad to attempt this install yourself.

Others may also tell you about various safety or convenience aspects involved.
I would suggest that you have someone experienced discuss your requirements and carry out a risk assessment for your particular situation before proceeding too far.

Once you have some idea of what you really want/need, you may be able to get a salesperson from a gate equipment supplier to visit your property to discuss available options to give you a better idea of material costs, then ask an installer for a price to fit.

Ground loops may or may not be necessary.
Multiple photo cells may or may not be necessary.
Edge contact strips may or may not be necessary.
Intercoms/manual release facility may or may not be necessary.

the list goes on, but i'm sure you get the idea.

Looks like I've got a project for myself! Haha

Use this and send to Came.
They will tell you what you need and give a local supplier.

This is not copyrighted and free to use. I do not work for them either,

Stops someone nicking your car if they can't open the gates ;)

Exactly!
So when they break in to get the keys so they can steal the car they can open the gates...

I will probably have to put my car keys in a safe or somewhere then, and make sure the alarm is set at night (as per usual) but it is worth it in the end... Came seems to be a good company, but their website is down at the moment, a bit of a shame...
