Eddie, I forgot to add, get yourself a good autorange multimeter. If you can stretch to a Fluke 116, it'll last you a lifetime, if not one of these was recommended to me a few months back on here, when I was looking for a wee pocket one;

The only problem with the cheaper DMM is they aren't true RMS meters, they do work okay, but accuracy is nor that great on them, they're good for fault finding etc, but for the extra money, i would go for the more expensive ones.
