Electrical supply to residential dwelling

Hi all first time poster here and was just wondering if you could help me out, my problem being that i have recently had some new work done in my house and have been told by the electrician who came to do some of the work that my house has no earth.
i have contacted my supplier and they have told me that anybody can do the wiring but it will need the supplier to put an earth spike in, i have no problem with them putting a spike in but surely , is it there obligation to put an earth into the house from this spike (from the rod to the henley block next to my meter) does anyone know because i will be a little miffed off to have been paying for a service for quite a while now (electrical supply) which quite frankly with no earth path isnt safe

Did the electrician make/leave anything live?
Did he do any testing/leave any certification?
He should not have if there is no main earth to your property as this is very dangerous and could result in you or yours receiving a fatal shock in the event of an earth fault.Turn off your main switch now!!
Call a registered electrician ASAP and get it checked/put right without delay

no he wouldnt carry out the work which is fair enough on his part , but this is what im trying to decifer is it down to the electricity board to sort out or will i just have to get it done of my own accord

The probable solution will be what is called a TT system, this is where your electrician installs an earth electrode and connects it in. Extra precautions will also need to be taken such as the use of RCDs for all circuits for this type of earthing arrangement.
Another option may be to approach your electricity supplier regarding a PME upgrade if this is possible.
Really speaking, the law as it stands at the moment says the supplier can refuse a connection of a protective conductor to their network if they think it inappropriate for safety reasons. The onus then falls onto the installation electrician to make the alternative arrangements before your system is put into service.
