Hello all,

Could someone help me work out how much electricity I'm using?

I took a meter reading 2 days ago of 323313, the last digit is the red one.

And then again 2 days later 324358' now that's a difference of 1045.

Now say its 16p per kw. So 1045x 16p is £167 !!!

That's cant be right?

More likely you misread the meter at some point. What was it at your last bill?

I have no idea, we dont read the meter...it a bit complicated.

The first figure is defo correct, as is the figure 2 days later.

But I have a feeling you ignore the last (red) digit.

Yep, ignore the last digit (the red one) as this is 1/10th of a unit.

Ok thanks,

Ok, 104 units in 2 days, 104 x 14p = £14.56 for 2 days!

That's £7.28 per day x 7 = £50.96 per week.

We are all electric in an old barn, it's cold but really?

its not hard to imagine it costing 50 quid a week if your heating, cooking and lighting the place electrically. That doesnt even include propriety things like washing machines, dishwashers and other appliances...

however, is this something new to you? have you moved in recently? if not what was the state of play this time last year?

Were you using £25 a week for electricity and £25 a week for gas would you feel any different?

We don't pay the bill as such.

It's a staff house and we have a set amount that gets paid, anything over that, we pay.

Hence wanting to keep an eye on it as we have had the heatifng on a lot because it's been cold.

I just wanted to check I was working it out correctly?

I have gone absolutely barmy on energy saving in the past 3 years and for me that would be a crazy amount!

I on average over 30 days use 8.73 units of electricity a day - during the winter months (classing that as October to March) and 6.92 during the spring/summer months. That roughly equates to around £33 per month in winter and £26 per month in summer.

For gas im not sure of the exact unit figures but my average summer monthly bill is £28 quid and £45 in the winter months.

very similar here have 90% led bulbs last month 7.9 a day averaging 8.06 a day over the year

if it heats up it uses electric

things to avoid
security lamps with pirs and 500w bulbs
down lighters very inefinefficientlighting a room very costly unless using led or low energy
count your down lighters and what wattage and voltage they are

how is your water heated and does it ever run cold

assuming its fairly open plan choose a room with a door or if thats not possible an upstairs room as your main living area as heat rises

i have CFL lamps in each fitting, no downlighters or spots. 12 watts in bedrooms, living room and hall/stairs. 20 watts in the kitchen and bathroom and outside lights. Never replaced a CFL in 5 years apart from one i dropped when i removed it to clean the shade! No complaints for brightness...plenty of light. If we need more light for whatever reason we have LED table lamps which are Very bright.

Dishwasher instead of washing up manually, all appliances A rated except gas cooker which is C.

Heating on 24/7 during winter controlled to 20.5 degrees with roomstat - did an experiment over just under 18 months a few years ago and one winter the heating was on timer, and the next it was on 24/7 and we used less energy with it on all the time than on the timer. Hot water heated once a day. Plenty available for what we now use it for.

cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, A rated double glazing...

Compared to when we first moved in and had none of these measures to begin with, we are now using about 30% less energy. Thats with an F rated boiler on C plan. I can only imagine how much we would save if we had a new boiler fitted. However we are no longer planning to stay here so no point upgrading now.

Electric heating is quite simply very expensive.

i've used 16kwh a day average over the last 30 days without any electric heating

Your using about 50kwh, which is about equivalent to my usage, plus one 3kw heater running for 11 hours....

One 3kw heater would certainly struggle to keep this fairly small old house warm at this time of year, so the figures are fairly sensible.

We have x2 2kw convector heaters going around 12hrs per day, 3kw immersion for 2 hrs and a 400w towel rail on all the time, which is thermostatically controlled.

That's just the heating, in this weather, it's still not as warm as we would like it.

heaters account for half your consumption[48 kw]
are you sure they are 2k and not 2 heat settings and up to 3kw that would make more sense approaching 75kwh
towel rail will be another 9kw as its unlikely to cut out much immersion another 6kw so that is around 90kw so 15 to find

what lighting do you have down lighters can easily add up to another kwh
