Electro Oil Sterling 50 Burner

not aware the doorstep trading regs apply if you have called the engineer to your house.

Trading standards and Oftec duly informed.

Boiler now running after I simply purged the supply from tank. Have discovered that this guy has clogged the cyclone in our Dyson (which should never be used for soot) and punctured the filter in our Bosch wet and dry vacuum.

He had screwed the boiler shutter open so hard that the head of the allen screw (actually gash metal/mazak aluminium) broke off. Result, shutter open wide, air-lock in supply pipe...... what more can I say. If anyone wants his name and address I'll be happy to supply. Right now I'd like a contract out on him.

Then read this here, where it says

They {the regulations} cover contracts that are made during both solicited and unsolicited visits by traders.

brittleware, take advice perhaps before you stop the cheque, but I would think that he would have a hard job getting his money as he didn't do a reasonable job, and he omitted to tell you that you have a seven day cooling off period.

Do you also mean to say he is oftec registered?

You may need the burner adjusting now it's running. Have you checked the fuel filters are clean?

Hi Oilman,

Well, this guy claims Oftec registration on his e-bay entry -

http://tinyurl.com/dnc46a.

I've reported him to that organisation so we'll see. Forgive me but why shouldn't we stop the cheque? Will he have a come back?

Thanks, I've checked the filters, all is good, clean and thanks, I intend to get pressure/C02 tested and adjusted by a more reputable trader/engineer.

Many thanks for your advice. What a brilliant thing the web/internet is!

What about this ? Phone number etc seems the same. If you look here there's no entry for that postcode.

I would ring oftec tomorrow (you'll be snowed in anyway :D ) and ask them in case it's a recent registration.

I suggested you get advice about the cheque as I'm not a legal advisor. If it were me, I'd stop it as that's only a civil matter, whereas Doorstep regs etc are not, so he's got bigger problems.

Now you see the benefit of not hijacking.

I rang Oftec - he's not registered though he claims to be on his ebay adverts. Google "boiler service charlwood", comes top of the list here. Scroll down.

You were certainly right about the snow too!

So have - or will - Oftec. I stopped his cheque too. Now waiting for any reaction from the man. (whose name I shan't mention but it's Cliff Roffey)

Dyson now functioning after pre-motor filter and cyclone washed out, scrubbing floor at 21:00 and awaiting new filter for Bosch vacuum cleaner, £17.38. Have pressure washed massively sooty exterior, where our cats were coming in with black rather than white feet, washed external walls but will have to re-paint some internal ones.

?! I've encountered this sort of thing before in the motor trade. And taken them on, and won! Whoopee!

You were certainly right about the snow too![snow really bad in headly near dorking, had to change from van to land rover, just to do a boiler call out, customer called 27 engineers before he called me, been to 3 call out today, i to am not oftec reged, but did do the collage course 4 years ago and got my certificate, but could not find the money to pay oftec, now i have a good customer yearly base, and dont need oftec, common sense is cheaper, someone like you had to fix your boiler should not not be in the job. ]

Cheaper than a FGA though.

Eh? :?

So this bloke used two of his customers vacuum cleaners and filled the filters with soot. He made a mess of the job, which he obviously didn't understand and stated that he couldn't get spares for a Stirling burner. Be kind, maybe he's a failed Banker, Estate Agent or Financial Advisor. They all deserve our sympathy don't they?
Stop the cheque and worry about the legality later. Get a man in who is recommended by neighbours and use the cost of that service, plus the repairs to your vacuums as a counter claim in the small claims court, if that is where you end up.
Also get him to repeat the claim that you cannot get spares for a Stirling burner in court and then produce a spares catalogue from the Internet or your local dealer.

I am not an engineer but this is the simple way to get the boiler going again after running out of oil.

Assuming it does not need bled - look at the temperature gauge on the boiler - beside it is a black "knob" - turn it and take it off. It reveals a little white 'thing' push it and that should let you hear the wonderful noise of a firing boiler.
