As we are living in the supposed 'Green is good' age, are there limits put in place as to how many and what times shops/major department stores can burn their plentiful lighting systems out of hours?

It is a major problem.

When i get moved to a new store, its one of the first things i try to address, that the lights and beer/pop/wine fridges are turned off at nights / timers set appropriately and used.

I even check fridge thermostats are set right! (Though sometimes its not possible to do it right, because the controller allows the temp to rise by 6 degrees from the set point, so it has to be set at minus 1 to keep it below 5)

But there are many stores where this does not happen :(

Bear in mind, some stores are rolling out new electronic shelf edge labels which take signals from the flickering of the lighting system, and in order to action overnight price changes, the lights switch on for the duration of the transmission to SELs and then turn back off. Maybe half an hour at about midnight. Not a waste though, IMO. Cheaper than paying a member of staff to swap paper shelf edge labels lol.

I have noticed staff in my local tesco express changing SEL's every morning now. Prices, I am told, go up every day somewhere in that store.

I am trying my hardest not to shop at Tesco, and want to make it my goal not to go there EVER AGAIN.

At least Co-op are huge supporters of Fair Trade gear.

Tesco couldn't give give a 5h1t...

securespark, its a known that when prices go down, prices elsewhere have to go up even more, to cover the price drops. The average is for prices to go up - its called inflation, though many price drops are covered by the manufacturers, on half price offers etc.

Price changes happen every day for most shops, so I wouldn't be too hard on Tesco, though on second thoughts, yes lets be hard on them. Just for the sake of it.

In our shop, when the weekly price change batches come down, theres always a few gasps of "jesus thats gonna get us some complaints" when, for example, warbutons bread now costs £1.09. It was 89p when i started working for the company (2004), been rising ever since. Bottles of 500ml pop were 89p back then. Now your talking 99p, but they are on a permenant multibuy 2 for £1.40. What if you only want one? Its pee poor value, considering 2 litre bottles (4 times as much) are £1.75. Again, these were £1.49 three years ago.

Sad state of affairs IMO, but inflation is inevitable. While huge companies like Tesco are raking it in, making billions in profit, we're struggling to buy loaves and pop :(

Back to topic, One of the area managers sent an email today (yes he has no life) about making sure the outside lights were off during the day. I quickly fired one back saying "never mind the outside lights, what about the shop floor lights???"

At at least 4 shops i've worked at, the staff either didn't know how to turn the shop lights off, or thought they were on timers. Guess what? They weren't on timers. One shop had a keyswitch by the front door, but no keys. One shop had a bank of lightswitches that nobody had had the initiative to try out. One shop left the lights on overnight because one of the morning staff were scared of the dark. One shop had a timer control board with override switches that had been thrown on because the timer wasn't set right. In all the shops I sorted the problems.

Anyway i told the area manager all this (not meaning to grass, just for his info lol) and he thanked me. (Wipes brown stuff off nose) So thats twice in one day he's at home on a bank holiday checking and sending emails. How sad.

I guess that's the attitude that got him to area manager.
