What's your view (practical and regs wise) on running one ethernet cable along side some mains in a UK domestic setup?
3 story 1900 house, my switch is in the cellar. I want to run a foiled cat6 from the cellar through a vertical void into the first floor landing to connect it to a WAP on a wall. It will be POE, but the WAP does not require much wattage. In this void (about 3m) between the ground floor and the first floor I also have a few other loose mains running through. Of course no trunking or anything, just usual old house wiring setup.
Didn't think much about it, just perhaps some EMI, but it seems a frequently asked question on the interwebs with differing advice. Some other related info: when my solar installer ran the 6mm T&E from my inverter to the CU, he also added two shielded Cat6 cables in the same approx 6m flexible conduit for future use. I've actually used one of them for Ethernet and get a cool +960mbit on a 1gb connection w/out any packet loss. So pretty relaxed about potential EMI impact on the ethernet connection.
I guess more concerned about regs. Would a future EICR look at this and comment? I assume the risk here is if mains cable and ethernet cable get damaged the ethernet could become live if they are so close to each other.
