a lot of people using this site will be self employed and used to keeping receipts for the end of year tax return. Im sure many will stretch the truth a little to claim a bit more than they should but really how many people here have claimed for:

porn
toothbrushes
a mortage that is already paid off
patio heaters
garden plants
bed sheets

?????

anyway what happens to these items when the mp sells the second home? they take it to the main home.

its a not a joke its fraud.

paying back the money is not enough. legal action should be taken.

If i unlawfully claimed tax relief for £20k per year i wouldnt get away with just paying it back i would be dragged before the courts. Why arent they?

That is ignorance about KNOWING something is a crime.
Filling out your tax return wrong out of stupidity, is not a crime.
Filling out your tax return wrong with the intention of avoiding payment, is.

Be honest: if you were a judge, and one these idiots was in front of your bench and said:

"I am sorry your Honour, I am thick as 2 short planks."

Would you tell him you honestly thought he was very clever?

It doesn't matter what you think. There was a lawyer on TV talking about it. To prove fraud you MUST show intent to defraud. Sloppiness in accounting isn't in law INTENT. The case would be thrown out.
