exterior lighting

Hi all,

I am keen to put an exterior light outside in the back garden - largely triggered by going a**se over down the outside steps
Problem is have nice fitted carpets etc which dont really feel like ripping up.
Is there any reason why I cannot use lighting from upstairs (via loft) feed an exterior cable down outside of house drill through put light switch on and feed up to exterior light?
