When farmers water their crops with those big sprayers where do they get their water from? The fields in question are nowhere near a natural water source and the phat hose to the sprayer appears to run parallel to the road for some distance.

My understanding is that they can use mains water, but they are not charged normal water rates.

Not sure about the UK but boreholes are quite common in Oz and Southern Africa, just found this

The farmers in the fens take water from the drains(rivers) or from their own reservoirs. That water is then fed via a network of under or overground pipes to the fields they will irrigate. They mostly irrigate potato crops.

Edit: the water they use is metered whether from the drains or their own supplies.
