Hi,

Putting downlights in our hall, downstairs and upstairs and was wondering should i but fire rated or not?

Or can I just but non-fire rated lights and put a heat shield over them??

thanks

Fire rated downlights are almost never required in a house. They are not required in your hall.

If the ceiling has insulation, something will be required to ensure there is a suitable space between the light fitting and the insulation. This is required regardless of the type of downlight.
This could be one of the fibre caps or metal trays sold for the purpose, or a box made from plasterboard, or some old ceramic tiles etc.

there is no insulation within the space where the lights are going just wooden floor boards above them.

The downstairs has about 15cm of space and upstairs will have about 15cm once the joiner has been to fit extra timber to create more space before fitting the ceiling.
