I want to do some basic fitted wardrobes for my lad, nothing too fancy, just most of the way along one wall, floor to ceiling. Is buying wardrobe base units (like you would a kitchen) a thing? then fitting plinths, panels to ceiling, and doors.
That’d be a lot easier for me time wise than making everything from scratch.
I know places like howdens do this kind of thing but not popped down to speak to them yet and keen to get any views on here. Also seen stuff about pre built ikea units being raised up and adapted etc.

I don't know if they still do, but Wickes used to sell wardrobe kits. They were pretty good as I recall and adaptable to different configurations: fitted a set for my sisiter many years ago.

Another option might be build a frame and get made to measure doors. Hotdoors (Bishops Stortford area) are very good: huge range, decent prices and very helpful.

Look up Ikea hacks on google etc, it's a great way for the DIYer to achieve professional results if you've an eye for detail.

This cost me £800 but I did have access to a reasonable set of cheap tools and a garage for all the timber work, took me a while too because I'm quite slow. Hate to think how much a carpenter would have charged

Howdens do fitted wardrobes which are variants of kitchen units, expect to pay a fair whack though.

@freddiemercurystwin has built an outstanding shelving unit using "Contiboard"? and MDF, I would be very pleased with the outcome.

Pinterest if you fancy having a go yourself, I usually build them out of 18mm Hidrofugo Moisture Resistant Mdf or you could use 18mm Moisture Resitant MDF it's about £30 a sheet.

Ive just built this one using oak veneered mdf & mr mdf, customer is happy, I dont like it. Cost £1800.

Cheers all
FMT - that looks great
@chirpychippy can’t see pic?

I’ve got no issue cutting and fitting MDF doors etc (will be painted), it’s just the white melamine carcassing I’m hoping to cheat a bit with…

Screw a leveled off 4x2 frame to the floor, and stick your IKEA/kitchen carcasses onto that.

If you've got a small gap at either end due to the off-the-shelf boxes not quite filling the full space, don't forget to fix a batten to the side of the carcass, gives you something to screw/glue a side trim panel to.

You can either run skirting up to it as Freddie has done, or let the carcasses overhang a little bit and fit a plinthy thing underneath.
Second option prevents stubbed toes, makes the room looks a tiny bit bigger, and saves you having to scribe in the skirting.
But make sure you can get the hoover under it!
