Fitting a new shower arm

A stilson wrench would do it , or possibly a decent length adjustable spanner ,if you have not rounded the flat sections.WD40 will not penetrate the thread sealant tape. Can you post a pic of the grips your using ?
The pics posted of the Triton shower arms look as though they will work ,can you order any of them ?
