One doesn't need to be an electrician to 'know'/do that. The isolator I'd bought was the same make and model as the one the guy used, ws still sealed in it's original box, and had been bought through a 'proper channel' (documented by an invoice I could have shown him.

Maybe, but the problem seems to be that the suppliers presumably don't seem to feel they can trust their employees to judge whether or not a product they're offered is a brand new and legitimate one obtained from a reputable source.

I suppose that depends on what sort of 'random stuff' one is talking about, but one hears a good few stories which are opposite to my person experience, in which meter fitters have happily fitted isolators provided by the customer

... it basically seems to be 'variable' and unpredictable!

Not only would mine not supply & fit an isolator, he phoned the office to ask if he was permitted to fit the one I supplied, nor would he give me the time to screw mine in place to wire to, then he fitted the meter in such a way to obstruct as much space as possible meaning far more effort than it should be Fitting the meter an inch or two across would have been no additional or tricky work but extremely easy to position one in the existing tails.
