Fitting masonry joist hangers to replace two rotten joists in terrace bathroom

I need to replace these two joists as a toilet was leaking for years and has rotted them out! Is it best to replace both joists and put joist hangers into the masonry? I was going to drill channels for the hangers to sit in the wall and then mortar them up ? Would you screw them into the wall as well ?

Either masonry hangers in the wall (if the joints are in a suitable place), or bolt a timber to the wall (with polythene between) and fit timber hangers.

Can I pack the hangers up ? The old floor joists are slightly bigger than the new ones ? Wish they would stock old style joists ?

Yes, but it needs a flat solid surface for the hanger to bear on, and it needs full solid packing above. So it's not always easy to acheive this.

I might go for the timber option each side and brace ? What fixings go into the wall for the wall plate ?

OP,
Your rotted joists are sitting in brick pockets in the wall - why not re-use the pockets again after cleaning them out, and removing the old joists tails?
You wrap the new joist tails in plastic and pack them up to level with the other joists.
Do you intend to use bolt-ons - the easiest option?
Or replacing full length joists across the room to the next bearing wall? What length are the full length joists?

FWIW: there are a few other noticeable items if you are interested?

The length of the joists are 2 metres plus the pocket recesses each side . They are very rotten on one side where the toilet leaked on them for years it seems. What’s the easiest way to fix these two ? The others seem ok to be fair.

OP,
At that short length you are best dropping the two rotted joists and installing new joists - dont think about sistering or bolt-on's, just replace them.

How do I do that when the old joist is in a pocket ?

Putting the new ones in the slots . I don’t understand how it is possible ? I

OP,
Your smaller section new joist should help you get an angle to lift & push the joist into a pocket - you can always chip away the brick below the pocket.

Or, on the inside wall, is the pocket open both sides, so the joist can be slid through the wall, & then pulled forward to seat in the outside wall "slot"?

Or, from the outside remove a little brickwork to open up the back of the "slot" & then slide the joist through the opening.

The above are commonly used methods, & are surprisingly speedy but if you feel more comfortable with a ledger & hangers go for it but still use the full length joists.
