you can not dim a "standard" flouescent light with a "standard" dimmer switch

Julie's friends in Yorkshire have a couple of wall lights on a dimmer with CFL's in. They dim really nicely (seriously!!) and neither are the CFL's intended for dimming nor is the dimmer intended for use with CFL's!

Strange, but true...

what brand of CFLs?

and what brand of dimmer?

and are there any non CFL lights on the dimmer as well?

i think a lot of CFLs contain SMPSUs which can interact badly with dimmers (just like two dimmers in series can interact badly)

How many bulbs? What wattage bulbs?? What type of light??
. it is a chandeliar type of light, with three 60 watt bulbs. tthanks for everybodies replies.

well, 180watt should be fine for most dimmers to cope with.

Try changing the dimmer for a normal plate switch, these are cheap, and it will prove if it is the dimmer or wiring at fault.
