flowerbed edging

hi

The edge (border) of a flowerbed in my front garden is made of terracotta (I guess, not sure, similar to that in the picture below).

It has been there since we moved in (maybe 10+ years). Somehow some part of it have "rotten" (broken to small pieces). I don't know if it is normal for this kind of material to deteriorate like this under the elements? If I want to replace them shall I use the same type of stuff or change to something else?

You shall use the same stuff, or you could use different stuff.























Oh, you mean, which is better?
 
terracotta will spall in frost (well cheap stuff will, the old victorian stuff wont) you can get concrete equivalents which is longer lasting and cheaper, but not as nice
