my 04 st170 has developed this ! the air con seems to work for a while before going off even thou the ligts are still on the dash,it never use to do this any ides ?

I think the system is just low on gas, so either buy a Halfords can of top up or visit an air con specialist.
After 6 years the gas pressure can easily be low even if there is no specific leak due to losses around the compressor seals.
If you go to a specialist, they will evacuate the system first and then repressurise with refridgerant gas, oil and a dye. If there are any leaks, the dye shows up under U/V light.

It's probably a good idea to get it serviced every couple of years. It doesn't cost much I think it was about £60 last time I had it done.
Not forgetting of course to run your a/c for at least 10 min every couple of weeks or so.

If your car has climate control, it might seem like the A/C is going off and on when in actual fact it's the heater that is doing that. You might be noticing the effect more in the winter than you do in the summer.
iirc kwik fit were doing a deal,where if they didnt lower your temperature then there was no charge,i personally wouldnt use a halfords special as on the car forum i frequent it hasnt had very good reports.
aslo bear in mind if your system is low then WHY IS IT,have you got a leak?,this needs to be investigated,of course this worse case scenario but be prepared.
