Anybody know exactly what they are?

They're very pretty.

It is a thing of beauty, to be sure.

Looking at the triangular pattern on it's back, and being in a mathsy sort of mood over the last day, it leads me to another mathematical curiousity, which I will set as a poser:

When do the interior angles in a triangle not add up to 180 degrees?

in france we found some amazing insects. Most notably, in one of the bedrooms in the house we were in, was a HUGE (mobile phone sized) grasshopper type insect. Its not as if it was all legs either, its body was quite substantial. Bright green.

Similar experience in Brittany - huge, and I mean HUGE wasps! Frightened us sh*****s

 And not too far from the actual answer I was looking for, which was to imagine you are in a helicopter hovering over lines which trace out what appear to be a triangle with straight sides. The lines are drawn on a hill, and the curvature means that when you measure the anlges at ground level, you won't necessarily get 180.
