I need to defrost the ice cream freezer at our shop. Some HALFWIT has HARDWIRED it into an unswitched FCU. Go on . . . . how do i defrost it without risking my life?

(And there are about 40 MCBs on the DBs in the cellar, none of them are specifically labelled "ice cream freezer")

Yes, if the fuse holder of the fcu has a screw cover, just unscrew it and pop it out, or if its just a plastic pop-in type of fcu, just lever the notch out with a small insulated screwdriver.

fair enough. The FCU is surface mounted, so the freezer sits 3 inches away from the wall and things always fall down the back of it  perhaps my electrician fitted it eh.

My old area manager moved a socket in one shop once. LIVE. (didn't need to undo the conductors though) Silly bugger, i know, but i wish he was still about, so he could move this FCU lol. Never mind!

I'm afraid he's gone to the great Co-op in the sky....he worked live once too many times...

Is there a label on the FCU indicating which MCB it is fed from? What do the labels on the MCBs say, any indication pointing to the FCU? Are there any switches on the freezer, thermostat you can rotate to off etc?
Before you do anything like remove the fuse from the FCU please check with your supervisor as they may not be happy with you doing this.

no, no, no and no. Theres a "Dirty line" 32A MCB, this could be it. The conduit from the FCU seems to go behind the impulse chiller, but i can see the plug and socket for the chiller above it, near the ceiling, just one conduit to the ceiling. I have a feeling the FCU takes its power from the same circuit as the lottery and paypoint plugs behind the tills, but I dont know what supplies these either (these aren't UPS supplied). The only circuit it could be is "Dirty line", all the others are specific to chillers and lighting rows and door locks etc.

However, the good news is i am my own supervisor, lol, so i went and pulled the fuse and defrosted the whole cabinet and cleaned it in and out today. I was very bored
