Front onto Highway

South Ribble Council provide an advice leaflet showing an example of a single storey extension which does NOT require Planning Permission, as long as you can answer NO to a list of questions. One of the questions asks if the proposal "Fronts onto a Highway". What does this mean in plain english?

Is it at the front of the property, ie a rear extension is NO
A porch on the front is YES

The proposal is at the side of the property and the full question reads: " Does the Proposal front onto a highway and forms either the principal elevation or a side elevation of the original dwellinghouse
 
You've just answered your own question mate, it's a side extension..........it therefore forms part 'the principal elevation or a side elevation of the original dwellinghouse'.

Was that a trick question ;)

Fronts a highway means "faces a highway"

A highway does not just mean a road, it can be a public path

The principle elevation is just that - the principle or main elevation of the property. This can be the front, side or rear elevation depending on the character and design of the property
 
So from what you are saying if the road (highway) is at the front, a side extention does not front unto the highway then.
