gaps in floor boards, your thoughts

The previous owner of my house used self adhesive vinyl tiles in my bathroom. They were so hard to remove that British Gas cut straight through them and underlying hardboard upgraded the central heating. Not a pretty sight so I thought about exposing the floorboards but there are gaps of up to 1.5cm between them. I really liked the rope/string idea but what about levelling, sanding and finishing? Isn't the final effect a bit ragged or uneven? Has anyone out there actually tried it?
