my friend has just had a new parquet floor laid about 2 months ago and now there are areas where the blocks have opened up leaving gaps about 2-3 ml in parts of the room, is this normal or what can be done to cure this, thanks

Has your friend had the heating cranked up on the high side?? having the heating on too high for prolonged periods can cause the wood to dry out and open up a bit hence the gaps.

A humidifier would possibly help as it would put a little bit of moisture back into the atmosphere hopefully closing the gaps up a bit.

Failing that you could put a colour match mastic filler into the gaps, perhaps masking the gaps off first and wiping off immediately with a damp cloth.

But maybe a call to the original contractor for some advice might be helpful also.
