Hello all,

Just wondering if you can offer me some general advice please!

I have a garage at the bottom of my sloped garden. At one end, due to the combination of tree roots and the higher earth level, some of the breeze-blocks are being pushed inwards and I fear that eventually this may cause it to collapse.

I don't use the garage other than for storage, so I could quite happily remove it. However, I've heard that partly due to the suspected asbestos roof, it may cost £1.5-2k to have it demolished, let alone the additional cost of then putting up a replacement fence or something. I don't have this sort of money to devote to this, so I'm trying to think of alternatives.

I've seen in the past people offering garages free to people if they demolish it themselves. Is this generally for other types of constructed garages does anyone know? Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I could do?

Thank you :)

I've attached some photos.

Your cheapest solution would be to repair the garage enough so it wont collapse.

Painting the outside with a silane siloxane based waterproofing agent will help keep the inside dry.

If you can dig back the earth and sort out the tree roots, or at least add some metal straps that would help.

The above will cost ££

Removal and new fence £££££££

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that makes sense.

With the metal straps, do you meant for these to be put onto the inside of the garage to stop the breezeblocks being pushed in by the earth/roots outside?

only a specialist contractor can deal with dismantling a building containing asbestos any one else as far as i know would be breaking the law as well as putting yours theres and everyone around yourse life at risk
you may be able to have it checked at a cost
try asking enviromental health in your local council

what exactly do you want?
do you have any want or need for a future garage/workshop?
a completely cleared site ?
remedial work on the roots and high earth?
repairs to the garage itself?

thats a cheap, poorly built garage but it seems to have served its purpose.

Thanks for the replies.

In an ideal world, I'd like it dismantled and a bigger garden as a result, but realistically, I can't really afford to do so, so my main realistic goal is to leave it in place but not have it fall down!

What is the most economical/effective way of stopping this problem getting worse do you think?

your allowed to remove asbestos see netregs.org.uk
usin care an doin it slowly you could free the roofin from its fixings an remove it sheet by sheet - remove a high end corner sheet first an then you can work fron steps inside the garge.
dont break or smash the sheets an wear safety stuff.
check with council tips if an how they receive asbstos or asbestos cement?
or may be you use a licensed company to bag an transport it.

with money savin sweat labouryou could then take the whole thing down an offer the blocks and joists for garage sale prices - skip the rest.
hire a Kango for breakin the base.
