Have decided to use the loft space in my garage for storage,

the joists are 520mm apart and are 34mm wide
i've laid 18mm chipboard over most of the area and screwed it down
it all seems strong enough to store things now, and i've tryed standing on it but it seems to flex a little - is this ok or do i need to add some reinforcment and if so how?

thanks

what depth are the joists.. mostly garage roofs arent designed for storage loadings.

What span are the joists doing? and are there any diagonal members between the rafters?

being a bit of a novice at DIY, i dont understand what you mean by "span" what i can say is that the joists run the full lenght of my garage which is just over the lenght of my vauxhal vectra, there is also 2 "V" wooden frames between the joist and the diagonal part of the roof itself

Ok so can assume they span about 5m :) and its a truss roof. Only really suitable for light storage, ie not books. Avoid standing/jumping on the joists.

Thanks for your replys and advice

is it possible to reinforse? maybe have a beam run in the middle of the garage between the side walls?

If its just for storage seems alot more trouble than its worth, put in some good thickness ply sheeting between the joists and screw it down at say 300mm centres, will reinforce it for storage

Yes, it's possible providing you follow the instruction correctly, have a read here regarding water tank storage which may interest you.
