Im building a garden room. I will have a UB above the bi fold door but would like to extend the roof to form a canopy similar to the below image. Due to the max building height of 2.5mts under permitted development i will need to fix the joists using joist hangers to the steel UB. Is there any suggestion on how to create the canopy extending beyound the Bifold out into the garden? I could put short sections of joists fixed to the UB but how would they be supported at the external perimeter? Any advice appreciated.

Presumably you're saying you don't want to sit your joists over the top of the beam? Like you would to form a simple cantilever.

I would hazard your SE could specify some stubby beams welded to the head beam to create the overhang, then the beam could be restrained on the other side with some straps onto each joist on the other side of the head beam, to stop it wanting to turn over, if that makes sense? Just my first thoughts of the top of my head.

I'm struggling to see how a simple cantilever wont't work with 2500 overall height unless you have really big spans or unnecessarily tall bifolds.

Talk to your SE: a bit of extra steel in the beam will be a lot cheaper than the cost of fabricating. I've used 100x200 RHS on its side in the past, not the most efficient use of the individual steel as it's working on its weaker dimension but overall much simpler.

Because he doesn't want to rest the roof joists on top of the head beam. He wants the head beam and joists all to be the same height. I'd have just made the bifold head a bit lower, keep it simple Simon!

He's saying he CAN'T rest the joists on the beam not that he doesn't want to.

Correct. 150mm from floor to DPC, 2100mm to top of Bifold, 200mm wooden Joists spanning 4.5mts plus 50mm fiirrings and 25mm OSB and I’m just over the 2.5mts. I will have a 150 / 180 UB on top of the Bifolds which means that I can’t continue the joists. Hope this makes sense. I think the only option is to cantilever outwards off the UB in steel and fix wooden joists to the end of them to form the fascia’s?
