Hi,

I've just received a lovely pair of swan necked gates that I bought online. The problem is, they're 30mm (total width) less than what i had ordered.

The gap between my two walls is 3120mm. Less 2off (100x100 posts) 10mm gap at either end and the middle = 2890mm

They sent me gates with an overall width of 2860mm.

They've offered me a few quid back as a sweetener or I could return them and wait another 8 weeks for a new set.

Do you think I'd get away with 1 post being 100x100 and the other 125x125? Or would it look daft.

 Thanks

Could you not buy two 125's and then rip them to 115 along one edge?

IMO and for what it's worth, why compromise when you wanted what you ordered. Unless the refund was substantial, I would want the gates collected and replaced with the size I ordered, and even if the refund was around the 50% mark, I would feel miffed each time I went through the new gates.

Are these wooden gates?

What sort of hinges are you planning to use?

They are wooden gates, yes. Redwood, I believe.

I was planning on using hook and band type hinges (24")

I use hook and band, and you can reposition the gate a bit with the position of the hook. But I am not expert at it. You need a bit of room as they will sag.

(Off topic, if you put two or more large greased stainless washers on each pin, the gates will swing quietly and more easily, without scraping the paint)

If the narrower width, is still wide enough for your needs, and the 'few quid' was a better offer, enough to make it more than worth-while. You can always find ways to adjust, or space the posts out.
