i have a strange problem with my golf o/s front electric window.sometimes it works ok then next time it will go down ok but not up. it will go up eventually but only by pressing the switch in short bursts (takes forever). i have been told each window has a convenience unit is this faulty, all other windows work ok. if so where are they .

That fault to me suggests lack of lubrication, this could be the mechanism itself or the window frame channels, a good squirt of silicone polish in the guides when the window is down, usually works wonders..
Or it could be a failing window switch.

thankyou for your help but lubrication is fine and switch is fairly new.

Could possibly be motor brushes, either stuck in their guides or worn down.

id go with the motor theory or maybe a broken wire in the wiring loom that runs into the door.
As far as i know there is only one convenience module and its usually under the front passenger seat, it can suffer from water ingress and puts faults on multiple items rather than the one you have

After many years, the electric windows on my old Volvo slowly ground to a halt. Lubricating the guides made little, if any difference.

After a particularly cold, wet and draughty trip down the motorway, I finally got round to getting inside the door. I found copious amounts of grease on the linkage, but it had all hardened to the point where it resembled the crust on a pork pie.

Cleaning up and re-greasing everything put it all to rights.
