Hi all. I am looking to lay a gravel driveway, I currently have what resembles part gravel, part hardcore and part tarmac. Can I lay gravel direct on top once flat and level? Thank you in advance.

Google "paving expert" You will find an excellent site that should answer all your questions in some detail.

Thank's for that, it looks like a no. I think I will need to break up the rigid parts, add some more sub base and use a vibrating plate to compact what is loose and what I have added. Does this sound like a plan?

I don't know the condition of your existing gravel / hardcore, but assuming the gravel is not rutted badly that area may only need topping up. I did suspect that it may be best to remove the tarmac , but there should be hardcore underneath. You need to work back from your finished levels to make sure your base is at the right level. Then ideally use a Geotextile membrane layer on top of the hardcore to keep the gravel from getting pushed into it. - It's not a critical item but I think makes a better job.

If you have any sunken area's , suspect the underlying material needs digging out and replacing with compacted hardcore.

Sure sounds like you have the right plan.
