HI All

I have just had a small barn conversion done - single floor by a reputable builder etc. Anyway all of the lighting is recessed fitting, halogen GU10 spotlamps with standard 50w bulbs.

one in the hallway has just blown and on removing it i noticed it has burnt the wooden ceiling baton that is closely located to it. I did not realise these things were so hot when in use  - can i replace then with a cooler running equivalent? I was thinking of the Cold cathode reflectors or LED lamps - can these be fitted as direct replacements?

Naturally I am concerned about the other lamps and the heat they are generating - I could go back to the builder but I may as well just go on and get them replaced asap

any advice gratefully received

thanks

You can replace them with alternatives. LED is much cooler but the ones that will give you a similar light output to halogens are not cheap. You could use CFL lamps but they sometimes need special fittings or else they stick out the front of the fitting.

Thanks for the fast reply - i dont mind paying more for the bulb if it stops the place burning down - i see the good led ones are around £15 so i will give them a try

Did you receive a certificate of compliance for this electrical installation from you local authority building control?

Would be worried about the distance between the lamp and the batten still, would probably recommend some form of fire break if they are that close.

Thanks for the replies - yes i have a cert of compliance, architects cert and the electricians cert ICM3

I cant blame the electrician as he put the wires in - it was the builder that actually fitted the lights

I'm very surprised the electrician allowed that, seeing as he was going to be signing it off.

Or has he, will he, or has he ever planned/been able to?

I wouldn't put my scheme membership on the line. Ever.

If you want good ones then they will cost you more ITRO £60 - £70,,, however they do give out almost the same light as a 45W halogen (I think they are rated at 7W!!!!)
