Up-lighters? They were in and out of fashion in few years
Center lights? Although still common they don't exactly give a room the modern look
Wall lights? They limit the ever changing layout of a room
Florescent? Although they have there uses, most people still see them as commercial because they sit under them all day
IMO Standard/table lamps are one of the only good alternative to down lighters especially when incorporated into the main lighting design via 5amp sockets/dimers etc.
