Hi folks,

My son has asked me to look at a "heater" which is not working. It is a roof mounted heater (installed by the previous owner) in his gym and looks at first glance like an outdoor floodlight.

The heater unit is unbranded and has no labelling or information on it, ie no manufacturer's details, no power, voltage, current or IP rating but looks identical to this patio heater https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_I...er_Exterior/index.html#Quartz_Heater_HEPA1300

The lamp (according to a local electrical supplier) is a "gold halogen heater lamp" and again there are no visible markings on the lamp (heater element).

There is mains voltage across the terminals in the light unit but the lamp does not heat up (illuminate). The wiring looks sound and all the wiring & connections (terminal block on lamp & at the switched fused outlet) seem good.

I have tried another lamp (1300w) which was brand new but it did not illuminate (heat up) either. The two lamps rattle when shaken so I suspect that, although 1 was brand new, both were blown?

Is there anything unusual / particular about these types of heater elements? Is there anything else I should check or should I try another lamp (heater element)?

Thanks

Do you have a multimeter? Check across the pins of the lamp for resistance/continuity. If it's good, you'll get a reading, if it's blown, you'll get open circuit.

Sometimes the prongs these quartz lamps sit in deform with heat and need a gentle bend back to make a good contact.

Thanks Iggifer,

Lamps are o/c - wasn't sure if this was a function of the lamps or if it was because they were blown. The contacts in the lighting unit are spring loaded pins and seem to be in good condition, ie springs are still strong & pins themselves do not appear deformed / corroded.

Thanks again.

If the lamps are OC then they're duff. The only time you'd expect to see OC on a lamp is on non-filament based lamps LEDs, CFL etc
