The 3 or 5 watt lamps with three LEDs in them are the best at the moment. They are getting close to halogen. TLC have them at £10 each at the moment. They WILL pay for themselves.
There is a third option - CFLs (tiny fluorescent lamps, standard energy saving lamps) - these as GU10 units though take a long time to warm up (think streetlights). But once warm their light output is impressive.

Ok then, good enough for display lighting. And certainly more efficient.
