Help Appreciated! Hall/Landing Light, Pics included

How many lighting circuits are there?

Is there an upstairs and a downstairs lighting circuit?

Have you determined which of these two lights is on which circuit?

The live has been designed to come from the downstairs circuit.

The neutral from upstairs and is functional

Check your drawing.

Can't help thinking you've got the up light and the up switch the wrong way round...

ok will do, apologies just drawing what i can see, appreciate what your saying about strapper etc but all contacts are good everywhere, i think its more the atual layout of the wires, especially when i moved the red earlier upstairs and the light came on permanently...

The red single wire currently in the COM upstairs does go to the bathroom ceiling rose via a spaghetti of wires to create what must be the live for upstairs?

Appreciate its difficult doing it blind but trying to give as much information as i can, thanks again :)

I suspect that the terminals on the switches are labelled incorrectly. It's certainly an odd way to lay them out.

OP, do you own a multimeter?

I would invest in a multimeter and do some dead tests,i.e. the

continuity of the strappers from switch 1 to 2 !

Good luck.

It's more likely your drawing should have shown;
The upstairs switch with a red and black from the downstairs switch, and a red to the upstairs light.

and

The upstairs light with a red from the upstairs switch (as mentioned above), a neutral presumably from the bathroom light, and a red from the bathroom light not joined to any thing.

It would seem either one of the switches is faulty, or more likely there is a break in the live wiring between the downstairs switch and the upstairs switch; or the live between the upstairs switch and the upstairs light.

As people have alrewady said, a cheap simple multimeter will help you out here, you only need to do very simple tests which people here will talk you through.

Is there an earth wire at the switches? I only ask as this can assist in testing.

Although a very odd switch assembly I think the labelling must be correct otherwise the downstairs light would not function. (Unless more wires are muddled)
Assuming that U have had someone at both switches and tried all combinations of switch position and nothing makes the light come on.

I think the most likely and single point of failures are

1) short strapper not making contact. Maybe just replace it.
2) single wire to upstairs rose broke.
3) switch fault
4) cut through cable between the switches.

thanks for assistance so far everyone, i will get a multimeter, may need some assistance there though if can help...

completely agree regarding drawing layout, trying to give as much info from what can be seen and what was shown in a pic on the Wiki shows that it doesnt look right (really am trying not just being lazy!) reposting etc

On the right hand side of the drawing, upstairs, the twin wire, black and red to the rose of the bathroom, includes that single wire drawn on its own but is in the mix in the attic with the red and the black...dark now but will get multimeter and try and post a pic..

does the wiring of the single wire to the COM upstairs sound correctly placed?

is the strapper downstairs from what youve seen look in the right place?

Worth checking the loft too, to check if the live to the landing light is damaged or there's an unexpected join that's broken.

Properly earthed in the boxes, promise!

I changed the strapper today to be sure...

will get a another switch to re-try
