Afternoon, my issue is as follows:

When the boiler or heating turns on after about 3 min there is a loud knocking noise, the boiler turns off and brown water comes out of the overflow pipe from the attic.

Had to revert to using the immersion for hot water.

Thanks for any suggestions

one gate vavle is posibly shut after the the pump causing this
by restricting water flow and increasing the presure the pipes bang
and water starts to boil so boilers safty kick in
thats my guess
or pump is on way out and not moving the water quick enough

Does the boiler overheat when heating HW only, CH only or both?
What boiler is it (make/model)?
Did the problem start suddenly, or has it got gradually worse?

This happened to me twice with a Potterton Prima system boiler.
First time, the pump was knackered. (£50 for new pump fixed it.)
Second time the control and overrun stats were found detached. (£1 for new clips fixed it).

Could be many causes, but check these first:

1) Check gate valves either side pump are open fully.

2) Check pump is working: Does the pipe either side the pump heat up fairly quicky when boiler is on?

3) Check boiler thermostats operating correctly.

Why gate valves? unless someone has touched em the boiler worked before.

Try
Pump.....working?
Gate valves....are they open why needed.
Finally, system blockage. Just how dirty is the system?

My guess would be on the pump being seized or dead

Hi,

boiler type Potterton Suprima 60L

Did the problem start suddenly, or has it got gradually worse? gradually worse

---------------------------------

Over the last few days a knocking noise was heard when the heating or hot water timer turned on.

Water (dark brown) was observed to be coming out of the overflow pipe from the loft.

The hot water started to get colder over the next few days.

Yesterday I manually turned the hot water (+ 1 hour) on and the following was observed:

Boiler turned on and fired up.

2 min later knocking noise inside the wall

Boiler turns off

Water (brown) is thrown out of the over flow pipe.

When I manually turned the heating on I got the same result (if I pushed the switch on again the boiler did stay on and managed to heat up the radiators.

Hot water for bath etc… is in the meantime being made by using the emersion (no water comes out of the overflow).

Last question: do I call a plumber or boiler tech?

Deffo sounds like the pumps goosed. Get a recommended heating engineer if you can.
