Hi, I asked my builder to put two new double sockets in the living room. He did so but then told me he had broken the ring.. but that it would be ok. Im worried about this. But due to ignorance I dont know what to say to him.

Twhack him round the head with the biggest fring pan you can lay your hands on, then refuse to pay him for his work until it has been checked.

Next, employ an electrician to find out wether the work is safe, and if not rectify any problems.

A broken ring is not OK. It could be quite dangerous if left as it is.

Are you sure he said broken the ring and not broken INTO the ring?

The latter is fine, but the former is dangerous and should be changed

In any event, he should have tested the circuit for continuity, insulation resistance and something called earth fault loop resistance.

the results of the tests he would have noted on the Minor Works Certificate that he would have given you. He did give you one, didnt he

i would doubt that very much after all a builder doing electrical work is like second nature to him , like me as an electrician piloting the space shuttle :D :D :D :D

Thanks for your advice. He is a twerp, but will do properly if I insist. I just dont want to see that ugly mug again, making choices for me without giving me an option, then the works done. It goes on and on.

You say he will do it properly if you insist, but as you are here asking a question about broken rings then obviously you do not know how it should be done and are now questioning his abilities therefore i recommend you get an electrician to look at the problem and not a bricklayer, or perhaps you know a carpenter who has a neon screwdriver who can sort it for you.

When a brick wall is built badly you can see it, when a socket is wired wrongly behind the faceplate you cannot , till it goes up in flames as it has been overloaded and is still on the 32A fuse for the ring main .
