Hello,
I'm a bit confused as to the phasing out of bulbs. I've found a light I want (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10086588)

But it uses a G9 25w halogen.

I can see that frosted ones are being phased out and I read a bit in Osram website about it but couldn't follow what they were saying:
01.09.2016
Clear lamps: Minimum requirement Energy Class B for all lamps except those with G9 and R7s bases (= phase out the current Class C HALOGEN ENERGY SAVER)
* Phase out lamps with E14/E27/B22d/B15d bases and voltages ≤ 60 V

Can anyone shed any light? I don't particularly want to buy a lamp where I cannot get bulbs in a couple of years for and as far as I can see there are no other energy saving alternatives.

Thanks.

so you're saying all G9 bulbs will be phased out? that's what I was asking in a long winded way :)

probably. they are halogen, thus grossly inefficient. Why not buy a nice energy saving fitting instead.

I didn't think you could get G9 equivalent energy saving bulbs as they are a very small and oddly shaped bulb. But I would hardly call 25w particularly bad.

Lights for projectors and other specialist equipment are not being phased out. You may find this includes some of the G9 range. However I selected my fittings so they will take discharge lamps. I have one std bulb and 9 energy saving was done as bulb failed well below the stated time and I had spare normal bulb handy but then left it that way as it starts quicker.

By that reasoning, you wouldnt call a 100w G9 (if you could get one) particularly bad either, because it gives off proportionally more light.

The point is, the lumens per watt of halogen lamps is poo.

One can purchase 300 watt CFLs now (they dont fit regular fittings though), the point is it produces over 21,000 lumens - the lumens per watt is very good.

But CFLs are still an awful technology. Halogen works, and it works well. It is still 30% more efficient than your regular GLS lamp.

I think I'll start lighting my house with theatre lights. They are not phasing out the 2kW lamps that they take :D

Yep, the green brigade won't be happy until we are all sitting in our homes reading by candlelight. Just a pity someone hasn't invented energy saving lightbulbs that are bright from the start, inexpensive, long lasting etc etc .
