Hi,

Looking for some help please!!
We have a Worchester Bosch 8000 Life (50kw) boiler. I am running it along side Tado - where i have Smart TRVs 3/4 of my radiators.

My house is fairly big - 5 bedrooms and roughly 300m2.
Its very cold outside at the moment, approx -1 and my gas heating bills are crazy. Im using 180-200kWh of gas per day - £12 a day.

I have my boiler flow temperature down to 58oC which is supposed to be the best for condensing boilers and my house just about feels comfortable - my heating is running alot to keep up the temperatures. I have my living spaces set at 19oC through the day, and all at 16.5 through the night. Unused rooms i have set at 16.5. Overall my house is only just warm. My house spands over 3 floors, I have insulation in my lofts and do suspect some poor glazing from the windows.

I have also tried range rating my boiler down but doesnt seem to make much a difference.
Unsure if i am running Tado wrong (schedules and grouping) or my boiler incorrectly or should switch out for Worchesters own thermostat system to allow for correct modulation?

If anyone can help me, that would be massively appreciated!!!

Many thanks

You need to look around house for holes.
Pipes going through airing cupboard ceiling to loft. Are they sealed.
Under bath is there holes in walls where pipes go through.
Windows and doors need to be sealed.
Loft hatch sealed air tight.

They vacuum test new houses and you can get a company in to test yourself but you can do lots yourself.

You could try just heating the rooms you're in.
We don't heat empty rooms, and we don't have heating on at night.
We keep doors closed between rooms whenever possible.
Even though the tank is well insulated, we only heat water shortly before we're going to use it.
I think our condensing boiler temp is nearer 50 degrees.
I don't think we could afford to (or would want to) keep the whole house warm.

180 kWh/day = 7.5 kW = 7500 W.

Say mean internal temperature is 17 C. Temperature difference to outside is 18 C. Thermal conductance seems to be 7500 / 18 = 420 W/C.

Say 300 m² over 3 floors = 100 m² of roof and floor, and 300 m² of walls (incl. windows). Total surface area = 500 m².

So thermal average conductivity (“U value”) = about 420 / 500 = 0.84 W/m²K.

(Have I got that right? Someone please check.)

Compare that with approximate U-values for some building components:

Solid brick wall: about 2.
Insulated cavity wall: about 0.6
Solid floor: about 0.8.
Roof with 100mm insulation: about 0.3
Single-glazed window: about 5.

I’d say you are using about the expected amount of gas.

How much do you think you should be paying, and why?
