Honda Izy about a year old, starts first time, every time, when cold but when I shut it off to empty the grass box it won't start again. On first pull to restart it, it always gives a bang/explodes through the exhaust. If left till next day it just repeats the process. If I don't shut it off when started and have someone else empty the grass box then it would run all day.

I've tried new petrol, new spark plug and cleaned the carb a few times although it seems spotless and as new.

    Any ideas appreciated.

Always try for a start on full throttle.....even when hot, a whiff of choke doesn't do any harm, releasing the choke immediately you pull the engine over.
Personally I tie the start handlebar up with a cord, just to keep the thing running......it seems daft to shut it off every 5 mins.
The plug is a NGK BPR6ES for these, and for some reason they do tend to eat them!

Thanks John. It has an automatic choke and I've just found a review on amazon which criticises this and it does seem to have similar symptoms to me. Not sure if anything can be done to check this though.

Yes, these are a bit of a pain as they do come on automatically - supposedly to avoid excess pollution!
Many people complain about this one.
I don't think you'll ever really sort this, so consider my trick of keeping the motor running until the lawn is done?
    John :)

Yes, will do. Don't know why I didn't of that, easier than using two people!

Just remember not to put your hand in to clear the last of the grass.

    Cheers

I had a similar problem the mower always started first time but as soon as you stopped it would not restart, firstly i took off the air filter and sprayed carb cleaner in to the carb then blew it out with compressed air! Still no good so dismantled carb cleaned and blew out with compressed air ensured the main jet was clear cleaning with needle and blowing out! I could not see any apparent dirt but the machine works fine now! I am no great mechanic so i think anyone could do it just take care to note what goes where
