Hi

As above really How much should it cost to commission a Combi Boiler?
We have been let down by a family member everything has been installed just needs to be commissioned from what ive been told its a simple job to actauly turn the gas on.

Why did the installer not commission the boiler? It's not a simple job, and requires some expertise and specialist testing equipment. You will get asked these sort of questions as many will suspect a diy install. It's also illegal to commission and sign off another's work.

Realistically it should cos a lot. Cant put a figure on it as it shouldnt be getting done.

Who evers commissioning it is putting their name against the gas pipe/flue system/boiler install and wet plumbing of the boiler so any gas man worth his salt wont be keen to do that without very thouroug investigation simply because people often DIY things then ask to commission with a nice story to accompany it.

Again as above, dont understand how it can be filled and gas piped up (correctly sized and checked) but they just couldnt make that last connection to the boiler???

Also to add, if the boilers not been connected to the gas, then it will 99% mean the system has not had its cold/hot flushes completed wich must be thorouly dont to ensure correct operation and warranty.

To JUST commission a boiler, I charge about £84 in my local area.

But of course that does not include notifying to local Building control. That would require reinstalling the boiler and is about twice to three times that figure.

If I just commission a boiler and it has not been installed by a genuine engineer then I make that very clear on the Benchmark certificate.

A posting like yours always make us wonder whats going on and we always advise that you tell us the whole story. For example was the installer currently gas registered?

My cousin who is a Gas Safe engineer got his employee to install everything he was supposed to come in and commission it but due to other reasons he can't or is not in a rush to come around to commission it. Maybe im using the wrong word all I need it someone to come in and connect the gas up to say its safe. I have already had a quote just wanted to know if its realistic.

The employee told me it was just a couple of turns under the boiler to actually turn the gas on..

So the gas pipe has been fitted to the boiler by a non registered individual and needs "turned on"?

Like I say, this sort of thing shouldnt be done so there is no "resonable price" to get a dodgey installer to sign things off for you.

Just because all it needs is a couple of bends on the gas doesn't mean its a simple job. It will need a visual inspection of everything before anything starts, then turning on, commissioning, filling out all the necessary paperwork, making sure it all runs right, balancing the heating system and then the engineer is putting his name to it.

What's the figure you have been quoted then?

How much were you quoted?
Commissioning a new appliance includes giving the system cold/hot chemical flush, electrical checks, purging gas lines, checking pressures ,analysing combustion, checking parameters etc. if iwas signing off someone else's work, which I wouldn't, I'd be checking the gas supply was up to standard along with the flue system.
Expect to pay a few quid or phone Agile.

Well one guy wanted £120 is that about right?

The guys a mug or a chancer.

Phone gassafe and they'll do a free check for you, may get your cousin struck off and a big fine but at leasy you'll be safe ish

We still have not been told the full story!

Was the installer gas registered himself?

Why did he not commission it?

What do you expect to be included in the commissioning?

It seems that you may not have read my reply to you above???

But now the job has expanded to a bit of pipework?

Well one guy wanted £120 is that about right?

I assume you think that is too much for "just connecting up and testing to make assure all is safe"?

What do you feel is about right?

I think now more than ever before, I'd not commission & sign-off anyones installation. Gawd knows what they've used for a gas line under the floor, Gawd knows how they've fitted the flue etc.

You're a brave man Tony doing it for 84 bangers!!
