How much to move a van on back of trailer?

Hi all - got a T3 Transporter that has an engine problem (its a coolant issue that started when hoses blew on a motorway a few years back - it didn't seize but I suspected it did some internal damage , as it never pulled quite the same and often staled which it never did)

Drove it a few times and it always overheated after 20 mins and blew coolant out.

Changed the 'easy' parts and still did it. Not moved to for a couple of years, still turns over etc but no MOT etc

Anyway, I want to move it to a specialist VW garage to get it re-con'd or 'new' replacement engine.

How much would you expect to have to pay to get it moved on the back of a truck?

Last time I used one (locally) it was £50- about ten years ago.

Join the RAC, run it down the road to get it warm and then ask the RAC to take you to the garage.

Pretty sure the RAC, AA and all others are used to that dodge by now. You will find in their. T&C's that the car has to be road legal so taxed, mot'd and insured.

Book it in for an mot at the same time! Should be insured anyway in case it gets nicked or catches fire.

Hi all, thanks for replies. I probably should have said that I was looking for a 'per miles' kind of price as I am not totally sure where I am going to take it yet, as I am waiting back on 2 emails to see if they would be able to do it.

It's a high top camper conversion and otherwise in pretty good condition and was passing MOT's regularly when it was in use, so although on paper it looks like it might not be worth spending a lot on it, it is a worthwhile project. If we were to get one of a similar age and quality with that was running ok, it would cost more than a fix (even if that fix was a 'new'/re-con engine)

So, I am willing to pay a good few £100 just to get to to the right garage that I know will be able to source an engine, or might even be able to re-build this one.

Ok now we know its worthwhile fixing it. Find the right garage and they may collect as part of the overall cost. Be careful, some unscrupulous places rob parts off one to fix another with promises regularly being broken, especially in the “classic” end of the business.

Thanks for the heads-up on that , but it just added to my paranoia that I need to find the right place for it. I've just joined a VW forum to ask for recommendations.

If you look through ebay, in the camper van section, you will find adverts for companies aimed at transporting projects.
A mate spent a fortune on moving a landrover from Devon to Sussex so get a fixed price agreed, using something like google maps to agree the distance.

as it's a vw there may be facebook groups to help identify good and bad garages or even one local to you
