Depends on situation but I try and install them so that it goes up in adjacent cupboard(s) and across at high level rather than snaking for 2-3m under the kickboards!

Last question, is there a solvent based alternative? My fear is that the compression nut may not have enough clearance between the pipe and the wall.
Yep or a rubber bung type for internal which will get you lower down.
Just chop a bit of the wall out.

The dishwasher won't be tight to the wall so you'll have a bit more space than the diagram.
Is it a push fit coupler that's on the pipe with the blanking plug in it?
