how to block isolate water from cistern

Hi all, I have to change the gate valve that isolates the the cistern to the cylinder but dont want to drain the full cistern unless really need to. what do you all use to block/isolate the cistern as to avoid drain down?

check the connector first in the tank some have lugs inside the connector
and the bungs don't always seal good.
