I have drill bits and spinners (wood bits) but nothing that is 38mm, is there anytricks of the trade at using what I have and still coming up with a nice neat hole? Many thanks

Thanks, yes I should just stop being tight!

What I would do is place a short piece of 40mm pipe where you want the hole, then simply hop on a flight to America and get a few carpenter ants. Bring them back and place them into the pipe and seal it with an end cap. Leave for a few hours and they will eat a perfect hole through the shelf, thus relieving you of the cost of a new bit/holesaw.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

That's very bad advicce , IMO

How is the OP to know if these carpenter ants are 1st fix or 2nd fix ones?

If the OP picks 1st fix ones, then the hole will be very rough for a shelf

A much more sensible option, would be if the OP has some smaller drills (and so does not need to buy any), then to drill say 7x 5mm holes and a 3mm one to make 38mm

Ah but thanks for the link, didnt realise you could buy them that big (actress, bishop)
